RTL+ and Videoland Crack the Five-Million Mark

The strong growth of RTL Group’s streaming services continues: Together, RTL+ in Germany and Hungary, and Videoland in the Netherlands have 5.5 million subscribers for the first time. The most successful formats on RTL+ in Germany include the reality shows “Temptation Island VIP,” “Das Sommerhaus der Stars” and “Der Bachelor” as well as live soccer broadcasts, such as the UEFA Europa League. The most famous fiction originals are “Sisi,” “Der König von Palma” and “Der Schiffsarzt.” In Hungary, the exclusive series “A Király” (The King) and daily series and reality formats such as “ValóVilág powered by Big Brother” contributed to the success in particular.

In the Netherlands, Videoland users especially loved the two crime series “Sleepers” and “Mocro Maffia” as well as season five of the hit US series “The Handmaidʼs Tale.” Other broadcasts high in the popularity ranking were a documentary about Dutch singer André Hazes and live broadcasts of kickboxing fights by promoter Glory. Videoland secured the rights to the Glory fights in August and has accompanied them with a live studio program ever since.

Curtain Up for RTL+ Musik

More than 90 million songs, covering all popular genres and artists, have been available on RTL+ Musik since August. For RTL Deutschland, the new service marks another milestone in the expansion of RTL+ into a fully comprehensive cross-media entertainment offering. RTL+ Musik was enabled through a partnership exclusive to the German market with Deezer, one of the world’s leading music streaming services. Beyond the extensive range of RTL+ video content, RTL+ Musik gives users access to millions of songs, more than 100 radio streams, and more than 5,000 playlists curated by music experts for every mood and every style of music.

In November, RTL+ expanded its offering to include another popular media genre: podcasts. To this end, the program of RTL Deutschland’s podcast platform Audio Now was integrated into the free version of the RTL+ Musik app. At the same time, the selection was expanded to include numerous exclusive formats. From the latest news to exciting true-crime stories and informative reports and the latest gossip from the world of celebrities, RTL+ users can now choose from thousands of podcasts, including more than 200 original RTL Deutschland productions. Since the beginning of 2023, users have also been able to stream the complete audio book catalog of the music streaming service Deezer, with around 90,000 titles from the range of well-known publishers such as Argon, Hörbuch Hamburg and Lübbe Audio.

Cross-Media Brand Extension

Following the merger of RTL Deutschland and Gruner + Jahr, RTL Deutschland continued the cross-media extension of its brands. In March, “Stern TV am Sonntag” was launched to complement the long-established TV magazine show “Stern TV.” It offers even more space for exciting discussions and the week’s most stirring topics. In 2022, “Stern TV am Sonntag” attracted an average 7.2 percent share of its 14- to 59-year-old target audience, and this figure is set to rise further in 2023.

The TV magazine show “Gala,” which started airing on RTL in June, also delivered a successful start. In each episode, host Annika Lau welcomes a celebrity guest and takes a personal look at the lives of the rich, beautiful, and famous. It also features closer looks at the latest fashion trends and beauty tips. In 2022, “Gala” was watched by an average 8.5 percent of viewers aged 14 to 59.

The new children’s TV magazine “Geolino TV,” the first joint project between the printed children’s magazine “Geolino” and the children’s channel Super RTL, also went cross-media in March. The popular-science TV show instantly achieved an audience share of 13.9 percent in its target group of three- to 13-year-olds, and in June won the prestigious children’s media award “Der weiße Elefant” for “Best TV Production: Popular-Science Magazine.”
